The Life of Dad – John Joseph Freitas

From July 1, 1936 to August 15, 2002

John Joseph Freitas

was born on July 1, 1936 in Merced, California to Joe and Mamie Freitas. He was the first of three children.

In 1936, Jesse Owens won 4 Olympic Gold Medals; the New York Yankees defeated the New York Giants 4-2 in the World Series; Eugene O’Neal Won the Nobel Prize for Literature;

Va Va and Vou Vou

John was the first son of Joe and Mamie Freitas.  Joe (Vou Vou) was the Post Master for the Atwater area. Mamie (Va Va) was where Dad got his strong fortitude.  She had many accomplishments including once being a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. What type of son was John, well let’s just say he had a lot of stories to tell.

Joe and Stephen

John had two brothers, Joe the middle brother and Stephen the youngest brother. While John was staying out of trouble it was up to him two keep his two younger brothers under control. For the most part he was successful.

Dad

John graduate from Merced High School in 1955. He was a mechanic for a few years before he had is own service station. He owned and operated a service station in Merced, closed that one and moved to Los Banos for his second venture in the industry before he became an electrician for San Joaquin Valley Dairymen’s. He worked there until retirement from ’68-’98. He was a proud Teamster member for all of those years.

Mom & Dad

John married Myrna May Volbrecht in 1957. Together they had seven wonderful children (if I do say so myself): John Francis (’58), Joann May (’59), Robert Brian (Aug. – Nov. ’60), Janet Rene (’61), Judith Ann (’63), Jacquie Lynn (’65), and Jeffery Mark (’70). Good luck at picking them out. Well, two should be obvious.
